MARCUS GARVEY MATH & SCIENCE SCHOOL
6th, 7th and 8th Grade Science
September 8, 2016
Dear Parents,
One of the major components of the science curriculum at Marcus Garvey Math and Science School is the Fall Science Fair Project. Student’s topics are due September 18, 2015. All students must complete a science fair project. Choosing projects, conducting investigations, and researching topics allow students the opportunity to further extend the inquiry and scientific process skills they work on throughout the year in the regular science curriculum. The requirements for the project include four components: an experiment with a write up, a written research report, an oral presentation, and a science board presentation.
Since science fair projects are very detailed and involve extra work, we are dividing the work into manageable segments for the students to follow and complete on a timely basis. This way, students will be able to focus on the important aspects of their project for greater success. Students will also have the benefit of student-teacher interaction at the most critical points on their projects. Ms. Thomas will also be available to students at various times. Below is the timeline for the Fall Science Fair Project:
Part 1: Due September 22 -Science Fair topic. Students will choose their topic, complete packet, and must receive teacher approval of topic. (See attached permission slip and schedule for more information.)
***students may begin investigation portion of the project if they so desire: however, it is very important to meet with Ms. Thomas to discuss the correct set-up of the experiment and the number of trials. Very important!!!! Additional information regarding the research paper which will be written APA style and more information will be given on September 30.
Part 2: Due October 4-Completed Reference list Collection Form for research of topic and graphic organizers (fishbones and 8th grade to complete umbrellas too) of research paper. (Handouts when students have packet approved.)
Part 3: Due November 17 - Science Fair Project science fair board, research paper, and oral presentation.
Each student is expected to complete a project on an individual basis. The project must be investigative, which means that students must find a project where they will be doing an experiment and collecting data. This project is 50% of each student’s grade for the second quarter. This is not a magic trick or volcano type project. Parents are asked to guide their student in meeting the due dates, assisting with research, and completing written work according to the dates above. All tasks must be submitted on designated dates NO EXCEPTIONS. A rubric scoring guide is included with the packet.
Ms. Thomas ([email protected]) will be available via e-mail and will assist with any questions you or your child may have.

I understand that the project must be approved by the teacher before I can begin any investigative and research work. I also understand that every step of the project must be completed on time and will count toward my 2nd quarter grade.
